Smart Cycling 123:  For new and returning cyclists

Cost: $10

If you are new to cycling or returning after years off of the bike, you may feel a little uncomfortable with some of the basic handling skills.  This clinic is designed to cover the basics in a safe environment and allow you to feel more comfortable in handling your bike.  We cover the basics- mounting and dismounting, starting and stopping, riding straight line and shifting gears, and scanning behind you and signaling turns.  The clinic will take 1-2 hours and takes place in a parking lot away from traffic.  It is a great refresher for the next level of instruction, Confidence in Traffic.

The course is open to all cyclists age 16 and older.  The instructors are certified by the League of American Bicyclists (www.bikeleague.org), with the support of the WashCo BTC.  Note: Class may be cancelled for less than 3 students.

Smart Cycling for Youth

If you would like your child to learn the basics of smart (safe) cycling, this course if for you.  Taught by League of American Cyclists certified instructors, this course cover helmets and fitting, basic bike safety checks, rules of the road, and how to scan for cars, signal turns and lane changes, etc.  It is designed for youths 10-15 years old who can already balance and steer the bike, but need to know safe practices.

The class lasts approximately 4 hours, and is mostly on-bike.  Depending on class size and skill levels, we may end with a safe neighborhood ride so the students can demonstrate their newly learned skills in a real life situation.  Each student must have a working bike and helmet.

Cost is $20/student. Use the form at the bottom of this page to indicate interest in our next public session or get more information about arranging a class for your scout troop, neighborhood friends, or church group together so everyone gets a chance to learn.
